Grade 10 students should plan on taking a full course load that includes English, Pure Math, Social Studies and Science. Students in Grade 11 and 12 should enroll in Chemistry, Physics and Biology in addition to English, Pure Math and Social Studies. Courses in Computing Science, Communication Skills and Calculus are not required, but are recommended, to better prepare students for the rigorous workload of a university science degree.

The remainder of your high school course load should include subjects that will introduce you to other disciplines such as philosophy, music, business and drama that you may find interesting enough to prompt you to pursue at a higher level in university.

The above course load is specific enough to provide the necessary pre-requisites to enter a Faculty of Science at any Canadian university. In addition, it is still general enough to provide you with the necessary pre-requisites to enter other university faculties should you decide to change your career plans in the future. Most universities also have a minimum high school grade requirement for entrance into their various faculties (i.e. 75% to a Faculty of Arts and 80% to a Faculty of Science).

In final preparation, we request that all high school students spend a few minutes during their next eye examination with their family optometrist to ask them about the optometric profession and other health-care career options.

As your high school teachers and counselors have already told you, the perfect career is the one that you look forward to going to on a Monday morning.

Good luck in your chosen career path.
