What are the dangers of “over-the-counter” cosmetic
contact lenses?
Coloured and patterned contact lenses are becoming a popular
cosmetic item. It is extremely important to discuss the use
of coloured or patterned lenses with your optometrist. He/she
will prescribe the lenses to fit your eye correctly, and will
give you detailed instructions for lens wear and care. Follow
your optometrist’s instructions carefully as poor contact
lens care and wear habits can lead to infection, permanent
eye damage or even blindness.
Over-the-counter contact lenses are not dispensed to an individual
prescription. Eye shapes are as different as the individual.
Lenses that are too tight can restrict the flow of oxygen
to the eye, leading to irritation and infection. Too large
lenses will slip out of place and obscure the wearer’s
vision. Ill fitting lenses can scratch the cornea and permanently
impair vision.
BEWARE! Don’t share, borrow or exchange
your prescription or cosmetic contact lenses. Contact lenses
carry bacteria and the transmission of this bacteria can cause
serious eye infections which may lead to permanently damaged
eyes. |
